Afghanistan recorded a historic first T20 international victory over an ICC full member team earlier today (March 27th), defeating the powerhouse West Indies by 6 runs in their dead rubber group stage match at Nagpur.
Having already qualified for the semi-finals with this game in hand, Windies skipper Darren Sammy opted to field first, with Chris Gayle rested and Elvin Lewis making his T20 International Debut.
The West Indies seemed to be in control of the game, taking wickets regularly and keeping Afghanistan’s big hitters in check.
The Afghans were restricted to 123 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in their 20 overs, with Najibullah Zadran top scoring with an unbeaten 48.
West Indies innings got off to a shaky start with Elvin Lewis being dismissed for a duck in the third over on debut.
Economical bowling from the Afghans with Amir Hamza leading the charge boasting an economy rate of 2.25, ensured the favorites never found their rhythm, restricting the Windies to 117 for the loss of 8 wickets in their 20 overs.
