The gazette notification to extend the time period of 23 local government institutions was released on Wednesday night.
The time period for these relevant institutions was due to expire on Wednesday. The gazette notes that the time period of the 23 local government institutions will be extended to June 30.
The time period of these local government bodies have been extended targeting the next Local Government Elections in June next year, under a mixed electoral system, after taking into consideration the appeals from political parties and the public regarding the delimitation of local government wards.
The time periods of the Colombo and Hambantota Municipal Councils were to expire by October 31, but was extended till December 31. It is the second time that the time period was extended for these 23 local government institutions.
The local government institutions are the Colombo Municipal Council, Dehiwala – Mount Lavinia Municipal Council, Gampaha Municipal Council, Negombo Municipal Council, Kurunegala Municipal Council, Kandy Municipal Council , Matale Municipal Council , Moratuwa Municipal Council, Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council, Badulla Municipal Council, Galle Municipal Council, Matara Municipal Council, Hambantota Municipal Council , Rathnapura Municipal Council, Anuradhapura Municipal Council and Kalmunai Municipal Council.
In addition, the time period of the Hambantota Pradeshiya Sabha, Suriyawewa Pradeshiya Sabha, Kolonnawa Urban Council,Kotikawatte-Mulleriyawa Pradeshiya Sabha, Kundasale Pradeshiya Sabha, Kadawathsathara and Gangawatakorale Pradeshiya Sabha, have thus been extended.
