Tensions between a group of United National Party supporters and United People’s Freedom Alliance supporters in the Katana area soared on Tuesday, November 10.

Police Media Spokesperson ASP Ruwan Gunasekera stated the situation took place when a road was being cleaned in the area.

According to our correspondent, a group of UPFA supporters were engaged in road cleaning and tensions soared when a group of UNP supporters arrived in the area.

State Minister of City Planning and Water Supply, Sudarshani Fernandopulle stated that the UNP organiser had threatened the driver of the back-hoe machine.

She went on to note that there was an attempt to open fire with a pistol. She added that an issue has arisen that the organizer of the government that speak of good government can act in this manner.

Chief Organiser for Katana, Rose Fernando stated that two of her supporters were assaulted when she had gone to inquire about the Back-hoe machine.

She added that a weapon was not used nor were threats made

The Police Media Spokesperson stated that the air pistol which was found at the location is suspected to belong to a supporter of UNP Chief Organiser for Negombo Rose Fernando.
