Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa Jayaram has written a letter to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging steps be taken to release all Indian fishermen in Sri Lankan custody.

In her letter, Jayalalitha highlighted that at present, 87 Indian fishermen and 39 fishing vessels were in Sri Lankan custody.

Jayalalitha’s letter was submitted following news of the arrest of  nine Indian fishermen on Wednesday morning.

The Sri Lanka Navy says that the nine Indian fishermen, who were arrested for allegedly violating the International Maritime Boundary Lines of Sri Lanka, have been handed over to the Kankesanthurai Fisheries Department.

Navy Spokesperson, Commander Indika de Silva, said the navy assisted the Coast Guard to arrest the nine fishermen in a fishing trawler found in waters northeast of Point Pedro on Wednesday morning.
