The US Assistant Secretary for Democracy and Human Rights and Labour, Tom Malinowski who arrived in the country recently with US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Nisha Biswal travelled to Trincomalee on Thursday August 27.

During his visit, Malinowski responded to questions on the proposed US resolution to support Sri Lanka’s decision to conduct its own inquiry into alleged human rights violations

He noted that the need of the hour is to create a judicial process that can be identified as credible, by both the people of Sri Lanka and the international community, adding that this does not mean that the process has to be a completely international process.

Tom Malinowski also stressed that this process should be independent of the country’s political leadership and should be led by “people who are trusted by the minority communities.
