Vehicular movement along the Hingurakgoda, Medirigiriya road was disrupted for nearly three hours as a result of a protest staged by a group of farmers. The protesters demanded that water be provided for the farmlands.

The protesters claimed that 350 acres of the paddy fields are facing  risk of destruction owing to not receiving adequate water.

Meanwhile farmers in Nikahena, Pathokwewa, Wadigawewa and Unakatuwa charged that, due to the problem at hand, 500 acres of paddy land may be destroyed.

North Central Province Opposition Leader Sydney Jayarathne who arrived at the location pledged to provide water to farmers within three days.

News1st contacted Polonnaruwa District Secretary S. Senanayake. He stated that the irrigation system does not have adequate water to provide the farmlands in question.

The District Secretary said that discussions are afoot with the Mahaweli Authority Irrigation Department and the Department of Agrarian services to address the problem.
