PAFFREL or People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections says they intend to deploy around 50 foreign election monitors at the upcoming general elections.
Executive director of PAFFREL Rohana Hettiarachchi said that they arrived at an initial agreement in this regard with the Asian election monitoring net. He added that a total of 1,500 election monitors would be deployed at the election.
He went on to say that the initial steps in deploying local election monitors for the upcoming general election are already in place and have already held several rounds of discussions with the Asian election motioning net with regard to the deployment of foreign election monitors.
He stated that Asian election motioning net have consented to sending a group of monitors and that they have been focusing on getting down a group of 50 election monitors who have an understanding of socioeconomic status of Sri Lanka and politics in the Asian region. A final decision in this regard will be reached after holdings discussions with the elections commissioner.
Meanwhile, PAFFREL says they have decided to hold discussions with the nomination boards of political parties that are contesting at the upcoming election with the aim of meeting the targets of the March 12th Declaration. Hettiarachchi said that discussions in this regard will commence in the coming weeks.
