The Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya retired today, Friday, June 26.

Mahinda Deshapriya also visited the Department of Pensions to obtain his documents of retirement.

Responding to the questions raised by journalists at the Department of Pensions, Mahinda Deshapriya noted that he was officially retiring as elections commissioner.

He went on to note that every government servant must retire and according to the 19th Amendment to the constitution, until an elections commission is appointed. the former elections commissioner must serve in that capacity and will continue to carry out his duties – until the commission is appointed.

Director General of Department of Pensions, Sunil Hettiarachchi noted that the elections commissioner arrived at the Department of Pensions today to submit the relevant documents and obtain his new pensions card.

Mahinda Deshapriya joined the public service in 1982 and was attached to the Department of Elections since 1983. He was promoted to Deputy Elections Commission in 2006 and in 2011, he became the Elections Commissioner of the country.
