Immigration Minister of Australia Peter Dutton and his envoy who arrived in the country on Tuesday met with the Minister of Resettlement, Reconstruction and Hindu Affairs D.M. Swaminathan in Colombo.
Discussions were held on various subjects including human trafficking and post-war resettlement in the country.
The meeting also saw the participation of the Australian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Robyn Mudie.
Minister of Resettlement, Reconstruction and Hindu Religious Affairs D. M. Swaminathan said that the main issue which was discussed was is the human trafficking issue in this country.
He added:
I think the Australian Hon. Minister has discussed this matter with the Hon. Prime Minister of Sri Lanka and probably with the president and they have come to an amicable understanding between the two countries in what way they can protect one another in doing so. I think that also has been discussed and if those two factors are considered the Australian Government probably will be quite willing, and we believe will assist Sri Lanka economically and otherwise – not only the Tamils but to the entire country – for the prosperity of this country.
