Former Minister of Economic Development Basil Rajapaksa was arrested by the Colombo Financial Crimes Division a short while ago. This was confirmed to News1st by Attorney at law U.R, de Silva, Counsel appearing on behalf of Basil Rajapaksa.
He went onto note that the B report is being compiled by the police adding that the former minister is due to be produced before the Kaduwela Magistrate along with two other persons.
Basil Rajapaksa appeared before the Financial Crimes Division on Wednesday (April 22nd) morning to provide a statement.
According to sources the former minister was questioned from around 11 am to 5 pm.
Basil Rajapaksa left the country soon after the presidential elections held in January and returned to the country on Tuesday (April 21st).
Meanwhile speaking to News1st, Police Media Spokesperson ASP Ruwan Gunasekara confirmed that Former Minister Basil Rajapaksa was charged under the ‘Public Property Act’, for the misuse of funds at the Divi Neguma dept during the last regime.
He said that Former Economic Development Ministry Secretary Dr. Nihal Jayatilaka and former Director General of the Divineguma Department, R.R.K. Ranawaka, also been arrested on the same charges.
ASP Gunasekara also noted that under the “public property act’ the decision on whether it is bailable or non-bailable offence is at the discretion of the magistrate.
meanwhile the Colombo magistrate has issued an interim injunction preventing protests from taking place outside the bribery commission.
However MP Basil Rajapaksa has been brought out of the Financial Crimes Investigations Department in Colombo.
