Chairman of the Central Provincial Council Mahinda Abeykoon, was sentenced to two and a half years rigorous imprisonment on Monday, March 30.
Abeykoon has been found guilty of violating election laws.
The sentence was handed down by Kandy High Court Judge Menaka Wijeysundera, on Monday March 30. A case had been filed against Mahinda Abeykoon and fourteen others, in connection with violating election laws, in the Hewaheta area in Galaha, in the run up to the 2001 General Election.
Eleven of the defendants had been acquitted during the course of the trial. When the case was taken up on Monday, Mahinda Abeykoon was found guilty on three charges.
He will serve six months in prison for the first charge and one year in prison each, for the second and third charges.
