A fire destroyed over 400 acres of land on a hill located at the Ambuluwawa Biodiversity Complex, in Gampola.

District Secretary of Kandy Gamini Seneviratne said that the spread of the fire was contained by Saturday afternoon.

The fire was spreading within the forest reserve  when the Fire Department of Kandy reached the Ambuluwawa Biodiversity Complex.

Locals in the area said that the fire that was reported from the foot of the hill last evening had spread to the peak by Saturday afternoon.

Later, the Police, Sri Lanka Army and the  residents undertook a joint effort to douse the fire. Fire trucks and fire wicks were used to contain the fire.

Our correspondent in the area said that slopes in the hill proved it difficult for fire-fighters to reach the fire and dry weather and gusts had increased the spread of the fire.

However, the spread of the fire was contained by Saturday afternoon. However massive destruction was caused to fauna and flora across over 400 acres of lands.
