Construction at the Colombo Port City Project which has led to much controversy is continuing.
However, acting Cabinet Spokesperson, Minister Lakshman Kiriella on Thursday said that the construction of the project has been suspended.
Construction work on the development project which is constructed artificially in the ocean area outside the city of Colombo commenced on the 17th of September 17, 2014.
An area no lesser than 575 acres is being constructed through land reclamation from the sea. However, the government says that they decided to suspend the construction as it is being done without a proper environment and project assessment.
National Organiser of the JHU, Nishantha Sri Warnasinghe said that the Environment Impact Assessment on this project has not been received.
Minister of Ports, Shipping and Aviation, Arjuna Ranatunga stated that within the next couple of weeks a decision will be taken whether to go ahead with the project or not.
