Heavy rainfall as low pressure area “intensifies into depression”

The Department of Meteorology says that the low pressure area around the country has intensified into a depression and located just off the southeast coast of Sri Lanka.

According to the Met Department, it is expected to move very closer to Sri Lanka resulting in  heavy rainfalls in the country today.

Accordingly,  rains of over 150mm are expected in many areas including the central hills. The Department of Meteorology forecasts intermittent showers or thundershowers in the sea areas around the country.

According to the department, winds will be North-Easterly and speed will be 50-60 km per hour.

The sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Kankesanthurai via Galle and Pottuvil may be very rough at times and dangerous as the winds can strengthen up to 80kmph at times.

Meanwhile, the  Duty Irrigation Engineer of the Bowatanne Reservoir says that  six spill gates of the Bowatenne reservoir have been opened and people living on either side of the Amban River are advised to be excise caution and vacate the area if necessary.
