Protests were organised today at four separate locations, obstructing vehicular movement along seveliral main roads in the country. A group of locals obstructed the Thambuttegama – Galnewa Main Road at the Hurigaswewa Junction and engaged in a demonstration on Thursday morning.
The demonstration was organised in protest over the death of a woman who was run over by a bus plying from Hurigaswewa to Katiyawa. The woman was killed at around 06.50 on Thursday morning while carrying her child to school in a bicycle. The victim was 29 year old Saumya Kumari, a mother of two from Hurigaswewa.
She leaves behind a child of nine months and a grade two student at the Hurigaswewa Vidyalaya who survived the accident. The accident prompted the demonstrations which lasted almost two hours.
The demonstrators dispersed after the Galnewa Police promised to conduct an impartial investigation into the accident.
Meanwhile, locals obstructed the Kurunegala – Madagalla road at the Godagala Junction in Ibbagamuwa demanding that the causeway located along the Arankele road be immediately renovated.
The Ibbagamuwa Divisional Secretariat arrived at the location and said that a solution will be provided, however the demonstrators were not moved by her words.
After a discussion with the village monk, the group dispersed. Another group of locals demonstrated on one lane of the Kurunegala Kandy road requesting that the Mawathgama – Airfield road be renovated.
The Opposition Leader of the North Western Province arrived at the location and subsequent to the discussion with him, the demonstrators dispersed. Students and parents of President’s College Kelaniya demonstrated today citing that the Divisional Secretariat was using the school grounds for development activities.
They demonstrated on the road opposite the school which hindered traffic on the Colombo – Kandy Main road.
Later the demonstrators visited the Office of the Divisional Secretariat of Kelaniya, however, they were denied permission to enter the premises.
They once again protested opposite the school.
Subsequently, police officers attached to the Kiribathgoda Police arrived at the location and promised to take steps over the matter, following which the demonstrators left the location.
