A police investigation has been launched over the clash that broke out between UPFA and UNP supporters in Mawathagama, Kurunegala.
A UNP North Western Provincial Councillor who was injured in the clash is currently receiving treatment at the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital.
Several events were organized on Friday, November 21 in lieu of the North Western Provincial Council Opposition Leader J.C.Alawathuwala being named the Chief UNP Organiser for the Mawathgama Electorate.
J.C. Alawathuwala and his entourage marched from Kurunegala to Mawathagama.
Our correspondent in the area said that when the group reached Mawathagama , another group obstructed them opposite the UPFA Office in Mawathgama, and when the UNPers attempted to pass the area, they were attacked.
North Western Provincial Councillor M.S. Perera who was injured in the attack was admitted to the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital.
The Police Media Spokesperson said that four persons connected to the attack have been identified.
Meanwhile, former UNP Pradeshiya Sabha Member, Chamila Ranasinghe who was injured when shots were fired at a group lighting fire crackers on Friday evening in Maggona is receiving treatment at the ICU of the National Hospital.
Police Media Spokesperson SSP Ajith Rohana said that a police team has been appointed to head the investigations over the incident.
