Indian Opening Batsman Rohit Sharma etched his name in the record books of cricket by becoming the first batsman to score 250 plus runs in a One Day International.
His 264 in the 4th ODI agaist Sri Lanka beat the previous world record of 219 made by fellow Indian Virender Shewag. India won the penultimate match of the series in which they have already claimed victory, by a staggering 153 runs.
The 4th ODI between India and Sri Lanka was played at the Eden Gardens which marks its 150th Anniversary on Thursday. The home team won the toss and decided to take first lease of the wicket.
Sri Lanka lost an opportunity to dismiss Sharma when he was on four runs. With luck at his side, Sharma went on to score 264 runs making him the first batsman in cricket history to score 250 plus runs in ODI’s.
His 264 comprised of 33 fours and 9 shots over the fence. The right-hander also became only the second batsman to hit two double centuries in ODIs.
His 264 steered the home side to 404 runs for the loss of five wickets. Chasing 405 runs to win, Sri Lanka never looked like posing a threat to the Indian bowlers, losing wickets at regular intervals.
Kusla Janith who has had a disappointing series was dismissed for a duck early on and was followed shortly afterwards by Dinesh Chandimal.
Mahela Jayawardene too failed to impress, making only two runs before being sent back to the dressing room.
Dilshan was dismissed for 34. Angelo Mathews and Lahiru Thirimanne, were the only Sri Lankan batsmen who looked comfortable out in the middle making 75 and 59 respectively.
However, with a mammoth run chase to be achieved, and few wickets in hand, their partnership barely made a dent in the state of play with India’s bowlers quickly making their way through the lower order.
