The Disaster Management Centre states that more than 9100 people have been evacuated owing to the risk of landslides. Residents of 31 estate houses in the Diyanegala Hills in Badulla have been temporarily relocated to safer grounds owing to the risk of landslides occurring in the area.

Our correspondent says that, there is a high risk of soil and sediment from the Namunukula hill falling atop  houses. Thereby, 95 families who were residing in these houses have been evacuated and placed in two relief camps.

Residents from the Maikkulama area in Chilaw staged a demonstration on Friday blocking the Chilaw – Colombo main road  demanding that a solution be provided to incessant flooding experienced in the area. The demonstrators dispersed from the location after officials agreed to hold discussions next Monday.

Meanwhile, heavy mist was experienced in several locations across the country due to the inclement weather conditions. Parts of Hambantota, Ambalantota and Tangalle were cloaked in mist.

Meanwhile, a number of areas in the Chilaw area too were covered in mist from Thursday night until Friday morning.
