Vavuniya Citizens’ Commitee head assaulted

The Chairman of the Citizens’ Committee of the Vavuniya District who was assaulted by an unidentified group is continuing to receive treatment at the Vavuniya Hospital.

Police says that investigations have been launched into the assault.
Chairman of the Vavuniya District Citizen’s Committee S. Devarasa was attacked at around 7.30 on Wednesday night by four motorcyclists while he was returning home after work.

Devarasa who sustained injuries in the assault was admitted to the Nedunkerni Hospital.
He was later transferred to the Vavuniya Hospital for further treatment.

The attack comes at a time when the Vavuniya Citizens’ Committee had organised a demonstration to be staged on Friday to demand that political prisoners be released.
Police officers arrived at the hospital and obtained a statement, after a complaint was lodged with the Vavuniya Police.

In his statement to the Police, Devarasa said that he was also threatened by the unidentified group.

Meanwhile, Human Rights Activist Sunanda Deshapriya in a twitter message said ” As Sri Lanka is assuring the Human Rights Commission of people’s rights, a leading activist is assaulted in Vavunia”
