President Mahinda Rajapaksa announced that Sri Lanka will be providing US$ 1 million in financial assistance to Palestine.
The donation was made in New York when the President called on Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
The meeting took place on the side-lines of the 69th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas had said that he and the people of Palestine appreciate the commitment and support of Sri Lanka and President Mahinda Rajapaksa towards Palestine and its people.
President Abbas informed President Rajapaksa on the current status of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip and also discussed the challenges faced by its people.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa also called on Afghanistan’s President-elect Ashraff Ghani Ahmadzai and congratulated him on his election.
The President had extended his best wishes on behalf of the Sri Lankan government and people. President Rajapaksa also added that Sri Lanka and Afghanistan can boast of many cultural links.
