A suspect is being fined Rs.8 million rupees by the Customs for smuggling a stock of drugs used for abortion into the country.
Customs Media Spokesperson Leslie Gamini said that the suspect who is a resident of Grandpass Colombo had smuggled the drugs into Sri Lanka from India on September 2 by indicating that they were Vitamin tablets.
He said that the drugs have been confiscated and will be destroyed in the presence of Customs and Health officials.
He also said that within the last three months alone, the Customs has charged upto Rs.10 million in fines from persons who smuggled drugs into the country.
