Fishermen in Rameshwaram staged a protest on Friday July 25 calling on Sri Lankan authorities to release Indian fishing vessels in Sri Lankan custody. Indian fishermen charge that 57 Indian fishing vessels are currently in Sri Lankan custody.
Over 700 fishermen from Rameshwaram staged the protest by not setting out to sea. A total of around 4000 fishermen joined in the protest.
President of the Rameshwaram Multi-Day Fishing Vessels Association N. Devadasan also stated that they will launch a massive protest campaign unless the fishing vessels detained by Sri Lanka are released immediately.
Navy Media Spokesperson Commander Kosala Warnakulasooriya stated that any individual who violates the Sri Lankan maritime boundary will be dealt with according to the law of the land.
