The Tamil National Alliance held discussions for a second day Sunday in Colombo with the delegation led by Oscar Fernandez Taranco, UN Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs.
Speaking to Newsfirst, TNA Media Spokesperson Suresh Premachandran elaborated on what was discussed at the talks:
“R. Sampanthan, Northern Province Chief Minister C.V. Vigneswaran and I, participated in the talks. We focused on three factors at the talks— we said that those who are yet to be resettled following the end of the war should be expeditiously resettled and that steps should be taken to develop their livelihoods. Various plans should be implemented for the development of the Northern Province.”
“But here problems have arisen with regard to the powers we have. There are two administrations, one under the Chief Minister of the Northern Province and another under the Governor, which are taking place parallel to each other,” he noted.
He also added: “Thereby, a situation where the people are not being served has arisen. We turned the attention of the UN delegation towards this matter. We also discussed a political solution. We turned the attention of the UN delegation towards the proposals we put forward for a political solution; the obstructions that were caused by various parties to this; and the manner in which the government acted at these times. We pointed out the necessity of having a third party to bring forth a political solution.”
