Update: Youth killed in Pasyala police fire

A youth died in the Pasyala area when the police opened fire at a motorcycle that failed to heed police orders.

The shooting took place on Tuesday night.

According to the police, a motorcycle travelling on the Colombo – Kandy main road towards Kandy was ordered to stop in close proximity to the Pasyala junction. The police noted that they opened fire when the motorcyclists failed to heed police orders. They added that the motorcyclists managed to travel 150 metres before collapsing.

However, the pillion rider states that the shooting was carried out at the location where the bike fell.

Residents who were present at the time of the incident state that the location marked by the police officers as the place where the victim collapsed was different. The remains of the deceased were placed at the morgue of the Wathupitiwala Base Hospital where the magisterial inquiry was carried out.

The deceased has been identified as twenty-three-year-old Indika Jayasinha, a resident of Kithulwala, Mirigama and a father of one.
