An employee of the Colombo Municipal Council has filed a police complaint stating that he was assaulted by a group of security officers at the municipal council, with the knowledge of the Municipal Secretary.

The employee stated that this alleged assault had taken place over a disagreement about a service transfer.

Sumith Hemantha, who was subjected to the assault, served as an office assistant at the Municipal Secretary’s office at the CMC.

He stated that recently, the Municipal Secretary had instructed him to go to the Borella Cemetery with a stack of documents and to set fire to them.

However, citing personal reasons, he had rejected this.

Thereafter, Hemantha who had not reported to work owing to illness, found upon his return, that he had been transferred to the Veterinarian’s Department.

He had lodged the complaint at the Cinnamon Gardens Police.

However, stating that no proper investigation was being held over the incident by the police, Sumith Hemantha filed a complaint at the Police Assistance Centre.

When Newsfirst attempted to contact the Municipal Secretary M.D.C. Janaki, she rejected our request.

Then get an order from our Commissioner. I’m going to our union meeting now. It’s at 10…….We can’t give.

Newsfirst then contacted the acting municipal commissioner of Colombo K.D. Chitrapala.

He stated that he was unaware of such an incident.
