A tense situation was reported at the Fort Railway Station on Tuesday evening.
The situation arose due a demonstration organised by casual workers attached to the Department of Railways demanding that their positions be made permanent.
The Railway Control Room said that the demonstration resulted in the delay of trains operating along the main railway lines and the coastal line. Trains operating on the coastal line were the most affected.
The Railway Control Room went on to note that as the casual workers of the department engaged in the demonstration on the tracks, the Ruhunu Kumari train failed to depart on time.
The demonstration hindered the operations of several of “office trains’ on Tuesday evening. Commuters were severely inconvenienced due to this demonstration.
Superintendent of Railway Operations, L.A.R. Ratnayake noted that the police later intervened to disperse the protesters after which services resumed in keeping with the schedule.
