Minister of External Affairs Professor G.L. Peiris says that the draft resolution before the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, takes the form of a separate government.

At a meeting organised by the National Intellectuals Council in Colombo on Monday evening, the Minister said that it is unjust to influence an independent nation in this fashion.

Prof. G.L. Peiris said: “If you read the entire document from beginning to end, it is exceedingly clear that  an alternate government, will interfere in the internal affairs of our country and decide on the internal, complex problems in our country and decide on what steps will be taken. This is what they are trying to do. This cannot be done. In whose hands does the future of this country lie? It is in the hands of the government elected by the people. That is social consensus.”

The Minister also clarified his stance on the proposal in the draft resolution that the High Commissioner for Human Rights should lead a comprehensive investigation into allegations of human rights violations.
