UPFA Southern Provincial Council candidates Ajith Prasanna and D.V. Upul were taken into police custody on Sunday.

While D.V. Upul was later released on bail, Ajith Prasanna is receiving treatment at a private hospital in Colombo, under police protection. The police say that Ajith Prasanna was arrested on charges of assaulting a police officer on the day the nominations were handed in in Galle.

Police Media Spokesperson, SSP Ajith Rohana stated that he is also accused of mis-using army uniforms. A special police unit in Galle arrested Ajith Prasanna at a private hospital on Sunday morning.

The police stated that he will remain in hospital under police protection until he is due to be presented at court tomorrow.

SSP Ajith Rohana further stated,

“The police perform their duties for the people of this country. They are not doing it for their own benefit. The reason the police remove posters and remove cut outs, and stop people from drawing on the roads, and remove VVIPs from vehicles and prevent people from putting dark shutters to safeguard the voting rights of the people. The power given by the Parliament is then used. In such an instance, it does not matter whether one is a candidate or a supporter. If power is used on the police,  then the police will use their power to counteract and will make sure the situation is under control.”
