The All Ceylon Common Fisheries Association staged a demonstration in Galle on Thursday charging that they have been deceived by the budget this year as well.
They point out that the budget had not focussed attention on the increase of productions costs of fishermen and their cost of living. The government introduced a special relief programme to the fishing community after they staged protests over the increase in fuel prices.
However, these fishermen charge that they had not received any relief for several months. Rathna Gamage, National Organiser of All Ceylon Common Fisheries Association made these comments;
“The fuel subsidy was only granted for four months of this year. There are arrears of eight months. The government is saying that it will be provided. Can the government that failed to provide a fuel subsidy for a month be able to give us a new package.”
