Here are some views that were expressed in parliament on Friday prior to the vote on the second reading of the budget.

DNA Parliamentarian, Anura Kumara Dissanayake expressed these views;

“When this government expects to earn 1,345 billion rupees in 2014, the expected interest payments on loans is 1,034 billion rupees. All of the government’s expenditures are being borne on debt. This means that even our head of state is eating on debt. Thereby, honourable speaker, it is not surprising that the man in the village is also being made to eat on debt.”

Minister of Public Administration and Home Affairs, W.D.J. Seneviratne shared these views;

“Since 1977, every government in this country has taken major loans to function. We did not as he claims, use loans obtained in the recent past for consumption. We took these loans and invested the money in expressways, power plants, airports, harbours, major bridges and developed roads, all of this has been given to the people of this country today.”

UNP Parliamentarian, Ranjan Ramanayake shared these views in parliament;

“What did Madam Sudarshani Fernandopulle say yesterday? She said the price of dhal was too much and not to tax sprats. She said that the labour force was becoming gradually weaker and that she would thereby make a proposal to the government if she could. It was only a woman that had the spine to say this in Parliament. You did not have the spine.”
