COLOMBO (News 1st): Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has thanked President Anura Kumara Dissanayake for his congratulatory message, expressing hope for stronger technical cooperation and bilateral trade between the two countries.
In his response on X, Lula said it was a pleasure to meet the Sri Lankan President in India in February this year.
He said the Brazilian people had demonstrated that democracy could be defended against disinformation and extremism, describing the election outcome as a great victory.
Lula secured a fourth, non-consecutive presidential term after defeating Senator Flávio Bolsonaro in the October 25 runoff election.
He received 51.79% of the valid votes, compared to Bolsonaro’s 48.21%, according to Brazil’s electoral authorities.
In his original message congratulating Lula, President Dissanayake described the result as a victory against corruption, division and political misinformation.
He said the Brazilian people had shown that they could not be misled by political dynasties or those who believed that power was greater than justice.
