Sri Lanka’s newly crowned Asian Games champion, Rumesh Tharanga, has returned to the island after making history in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.
Tharanga arrived in Sri Lanka to a warm welcome at the Bandaranaike International Airport, days after securing the gold medal in the men’s javelin throw at the 2026 Asian Games.
His winning throw of 88.55 metres made him the first Sri Lankan athlete to win an Asian Games gold medal in the javelin throw.
The achievement adds another historic chapter to what has already been a remarkable year for the Sri Lankan thrower.
Tharanga has claimed several major international titles this year, including a Commonwealth Games gold medal, the World Ultimate Championship and the Diamond League Final, along with four stage victories.
