Ex-Lanka Mineral Sands Chief Released on Bail

COLOMBO (News 1st); Former Lanka Mineral Sands Limited Chairman Udeni Dasanayake was today released on bail by Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama in connection with an investigation being conducted by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC).

The Magistrate ordered that the suspect be released on two personal bail bonds of Rs. 2 million each.

The court also imposed an overseas travel ban on Dasanayake.

The Bribery Commission arrested the former chairman in relation to an investigation into the recruitment of casual labourers to Lanka Mineral Sands Limited during 2023 and 2024, allegedly outside approved procedures and in excess of the authorized workforce allocation for labour positions.

Investigators allege that the irregular recruitment process resulted in a financial loss of Rs. 34,438,650.42 to the State-owned enterprise.

According to the allegations presented in court, Dasanayake is accused of committing the offence of corruption by facilitating the payment of salaries to those casual employees, thereby conferring undue benefits on the individuals concerned.

The case is scheduled to be called again on November 20.
