UNHRC to Review Latest Report on Sri Lanka Today (8)

COLOMBO (News 1st); The latest report by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights on the human rights situation in Sri Lanka is scheduled to be presented to the United Nations Human Rights Council on September 8.

The presentation will take place during the 63rd Session of the UN Human Rights Council, which is being held in Geneva, Switzerland.

The report will provide the Council with the most recent assessment of developments relating to human rights in Sri Lanka, including issues connected to reconciliation, accountability and broader human rights concerns.

Last week, an advanced report by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights noted that Sri Lanka's worst-ever economic crisis resulted in human rights challenges driven by corruption and fraud.

The report states that as a consequence, only a very limited share of the country's revenue has been available for social welfare expenditure.

The report also refers to the widely discussed SriLankan Airlines Airbus transaction and its connection to former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, as well as investigations relating to the alleged misuse of public funds involving former President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
