Indian Defence Minister Arrives in Sri Lanka After 38-Year Gap

COLOMBO (News 1st); Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh arrived in Sri Lanka this (8) afternoon, beginning a historic three-day official visit aimed at strengthening cooperation between the two neighbouring countries in the fields of defence, economic engagement, maritime affairs and regional security.

According to the Indian Ministry of Defence, Rajnath Singh is accompanied by senior officials from India's Ministry of External Affairs and will remain in Sri Lanka until September 10.

During the visit, the Indian Defence Minister is scheduled to hold high-level discussions with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya and Defence Secretary Sampath Thuyacontha.

He is also expected to meet members of the Indian community residing in Colombo.

The Indian Ministry of Defence stated that the visit is intended to further reinforce the longstanding historical relationship between India and Sri Lanka while enhancing cooperation in defence, economic development, maritime security and broader regional stability.

The visit carries added significance as it marks the first official visit to Sri Lanka by an Indian Defence Minister in 38 years.

The last Indian Defence Minister to undertake an official visit to Sri Lanka was K.C. Pant in 1988 during the tenure of former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
