Train Services Between Peradeniya And Colombo Fort To Resume Next Month

COLOMBO (News 1st): The Ministry of Transport says plans are underway to resume train services between Colombo and Peradeniya from the first week of next month.

The Ministry said restoration work along the railway line up to Peradeniya, which was damaged by Cyclone Ditwah, has reached its final stage.

A total of 97 locations along the railway line between Maradana and Kandy were damaged due to the disaster caused by Cyclone Ditwah.

The Railway Department said restoration work at 92 of these locations had been fully completed by last month.

The section between Ihala Kotte and Kadugannawa was among the areas most severely affected along the Upcountry railway line towards Kandy.

The most significant damage was reported to the railway track near Balana Railway Station, where five locations were destroyed by landslides and earth slips.

At present, Upcountry train services operate only between Colombo and Rambukkana.

While train services between Nanu Oya and Badulla resumed on June 20, train services between Rambukkana and Nanu Oya have not yet resumed.

Restoration work on the Kalu Bridge between Peradeniya and Kandy, which was severely damaged by Cyclone Ditwah, is still underway.
