COLOMBO (News 1st): Six people have died in road accidents that occurred in several areas across the island within the past 24 hours.
A 49-year-old woman died in an accident when a three-wheeler veered off the road in Vinayagapuram 01 area along Thirukkovil-Pothuvil road.
Police stated that the three-wheeler driver, two women traveling in the back seat, and two children were injured in the accident.
One of the women died after being admitted to the Thirukkovil Hospital.
In another accident, a 37-year-old three-wheeler driver died when a bus and a three-wheeler collided in the Gotatuwa area along the Pettah-Gotatuwa road.
Police stated that a man and a woman traveling in the back seat of the three-wheeler were injured in the incident.
An accident also occurred when a car and a motorcycle collided in the Werapola along the Kurunegala-Puttalam road.
Police stated that the 67-year-old motorcyclist, who sustained serious injuries in the accident, was dead upon admission to the Wariyapola Hospital.
In Athurugiriya, near the 6th-kilometre post on the expressway, a lorry collided with a prime mover with a trailer that had been parked due to a mechanical breakdown.
Police stated that the passenger traveling in the front left seat of the lorry died due to severe injuries sustained in the accident.
The driver of the lorry was also seriously injured and admitted to the Homagama Hospital.
A pedestrian was struck by a bus, near the 6th-kilometre post along the Tissamaharama Tank Bund road.
The accident occured while the pedestrian was crossing the road.
According to Police, the 38-year-old pedestrian, who sustained serious injuries, died after being admitted to the Debarawewa Hospital.
In a seperate incident, a motorcyclist lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road and fall into a ditch, along the Chilaw-Bangadeniya-Pallama road.
According to Police, the 24-year-old motorcyclist, who was seriously injured in the accident, died after being admitted to the Chilaw Hospital.
