Prisons Push To Ease Overcrowding Amid Report Delays

COLOMBO (News 1 st): The Department of Prisons has informed the Ministry of Justice to take necessary action regarding delayed Government Analyst reports.

Acting Commissioner General of Prisons Prasad Hemantha said that the delay in receiving government analyst reports in turn results in suspects spending an extended period of time in remand custody.

He also said that this situation has led to overcrowding in prisons.

He further stated that to address the overcrowding of prisons drug addicts have been transferred to rehabilitation centers.

Currently, approximately 39,000 inmates are being held in prisons across the island.
