Cabinet To Consider Proposal To Extend Judges’ Retirement Age Today (27)

COLOMBO (News 1st): A proposal to revise the retirement age of judges across the country's judiciary, including the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal, is scheduled to be presented to the Cabinet today.

Under Article 107 Sub Section (5) of the Constitution, the current retirement age of Supreme Court judges is 65 years.

The new proposal seeks to amend the Constitution to increase the retirement age of Supreme Court judges to 67 years.

The same constitutional provision currently sets the retirement age of Court of Appeal judges at 63 years, with the proposed amendment seeking to extend it to 65 years.

Sources at the Ministry of Justice said a parallel proposal will also be submitted to revise the retirement age of High Court and Magistrate's Court judges.

At present, the mandatory retirement age for High Court judges is 61 years, while Magistrates and District Court judges retire at 60 years.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Justice said the retirement age for judges in these categories is also expected to be revised under the proposed reforms.
