Eight Tons Of Coastal Plastic Waste To Be Recycled Today

COLOMBO (News 1st): Eight tons of collected plastic bottles, which had washed ashore along the coastal stretch from Jaffna through Galle up to Yala, are being sent for recycling today.

The Chairman of the Marine Environment Protection Authority, Samantha Gunasekara, mentioned that these plastic bottles were collected concurrently with the removal of plastic beads that had washed ashore onto the country's coast from the "MSC Elsa 3" ship, which caught fire and was destroyed in Kerala waters.

It is noteworthy that the cost for this was provided by the company that owns the Elsa 3 vessel.

The Chairman stated that it is a significant milestone to have the opportunity to clean the coastal zone by removing these plastic bottles, which have impacted the country's marine ecosystem for decades.

He also stated that 1,800 workers were engaged in cleaning the coastal zone for this purpose.
