COLOMBO (News 1st); British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his decision to resign as Leader of the Labour Party, setting in motion a leadership contest that could reshape the United Kingdom’s political landscape.

In a formal statement, Starmer said he had already informed King Charles III of his decision earlier in the day, confirming that he would step aside from party leadership while continuing to serve as Prime Minister until the transition process is complete.

“I will resign as Leader of the Labour Party. I have spoken to His Majesty the King this morning, to inform him of my decision,” Starmer said, signalling a significant shift at the highest levels of government.

Outlining the next steps, Starmer stated that he would request the Labour Party’s National Executive Committee to establish a clear timetable for the leadership election. According to the proposed plan, nominations are expected to open on July 9, with the process set to conclude before Parliament reconvenes in September.

The Prime Minister emphasised that he would remain in office during the leadership contest, pledging his full cooperation for a stable and orderly transfer of power.

In a message aimed at party unity and national stability, Starmer also pledged his full support to his successor, expressing confidence in the future leadership of the country.
