COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka’s rising athletics star Rumesh Tharanga delivered a stellar performance on the global stage by winning the men’s javelin throw event at the prestigious 2026 Ostrava Golden Spike meet, becoming the first Sri Lankan ever to secure victory at the renowned international competition.
The 65th edition of the Golden Spike athletics championship was held in the Czech Republic, attracting some of the world’s top track and field athletes. Competing under high expectations, Tharanga produced a commanding display yesterday (16) evening, achieving a winning throw of 86.57 metres to finish at the top of the field.
The victory is being widely celebrated as a historic moment for Sri Lankan athletics, as no athlete from the country had previously claimed a title at the Golden Spike meet, one of Europe’s most respected athletics events.
Tharanga’s performance once again underlines his rapid rise in international javelin throwing, where he has emerged as one of the leading competitors in recent months.
At the Diamond League meet in Rome, Tharanga produced an impressive throw of 92.62 metres, placing him among the top performers globally and firmly establishing his credentials as a world-class javelin thrower.
That remarkable achievement has contributed to his current standing in the global rankings, where he is positioned third in the world in the men’s javelin throw event.
With major competitions on the horizon, including upcoming international championships, Tharanga’s latest success adds to expectations that he could continue to challenge for top honours on the world stage.
