COLOMBO (News 1st); Germany delivered a ruthless statement of intent at the FIFA World Cup 2026, dismantling debutants Curaçao 7-1 in a one-sided Group E clash at the Houston Stadium on June 14. The four-time champions showcased attacking brilliance and depth, overwhelming the Caribbean side in a high-scoring encounter that underlined their ambitions for the tournament.
Kai Havertz emerged as the standout performer, netting twice in a commanding display as Germany surged past a spirited but ultimately outclassed Curaçao side.
The Arsenal forward struck once in each half, capping a devastating team performance that also saw Felix Nmecha, Nico Schlotterbeck, Jamal Musiala, Nathaniel Brown and Deniz Undav all find the back of the net.
Germany wasted little time asserting dominance, opening the scoring in just the sixth minute through Nmecha, who finished clinically after a swift attacking move.
However, Curaçao, playing in their first-ever World Cup match, responded with a moment of history in the 21st minute when Livano Comenencia scored the nation’s maiden goal at the tournament, briefly leveling the score and igniting celebrations among their supporters.
Any hopes of an upset were swiftly extinguished as Germany reasserted control before halftime. Schlotterbeck restored the lead with a well-taken header in the 38th minute, and Havertz extended the advantage with a penalty deep into first-half stoppage time to make it 3-1 at the break.
The second half turned into a masterclass from Julian Nagelsmann’s side. Musiala struck within moments of the restart to make it 4-1, effectively ending the contest. Brown added a fifth goal in the 68th minute, before Undav extended the lead to six ten minutes later. Havertz then completed his brace in the 88th minute, sealing a comprehensive 7-1 victory and sending a strong message to the rest of the tournament.
Statistically, Germany dominated every aspect of the game, enjoying around 65 percent possession and registering 26 shots compared to Curaçao’s limited opportunities. The gulf in quality was evident throughout, as Germany’s fluid attack repeatedly broke down Curaçao’s defense.
Despite the heavy defeat, Curaçao’s historic milestone will be remembered, with Comenencia’s goal securing their place in World Cup history as one of the smallest nations ever to score at the tournament.
The emphatic victory also saw Germany achieve notable milestones, including becoming the highest-scoring nation in FIFA World Cup history, surpassing Brazil’s all-time tally.
