COLOMBO (News 1st); Anuradhapura Atamasthanadhipathi Ven. Pallegama Hemarathana Thero, who was remanded in custody over allegations related to the serious sexual abuse of a minor girl, and the victim’s mother, who had also been remanded for allegedly aiding and abetting the offence, were today ordered to be released on strict bail conditions.
The order was issued by Anuradhapura Chief Magistrate and Additional District Judge Siyapath Sasidu Wickramaratne.
The Anuradhapura Magistrate’s Court imposed two personal bail bonds of Rs. 5 million each on Ven. Pallegama Hemarathana Thero.
In addition, a cash bail of Rs. 100,000 was imposed by the Chief Magistrate.
A travel ban was also issued against the suspect monk, preventing him from leaving the country, with instructions issued to the Controller General of Immigration and Emigration.
The Chief Magistrate further warned the suspect not to interfere with witnesses.
The Magistrate informed the suspect that if there is any report to the court of attempts to influence witnesses, bail would be cancelled and he would be remanded again.
Meanwhile, the victim’s mother was granted bail on two personal bonds of Rs. 500,000 each, with a similar travel ban imposed on her.
