COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka Police have announced a comprehensive security programme for the Vesak season, aiming to ensure the safety of devotees and maintain the sanctity of religious observances across the country.
The Police Media Division noted that the Vesak Full Moon Poya Day, regarded as the most sacred occasion for Buddhists worldwide, will be observed on May 30, 2026. During the Vesak period, devotees across Sri Lanka are expected to prioritise both Amisa Pooja and Prathipatti Pooja.
Police stated that a special island-wide security plan will be implemented throughout the Vesak week to facilitate the public in carrying out religious activities freely, peacefully, and without inconvenience.
Large crowds are anticipated at sacred Buddhist sites and places of worship, alongside the organisation of Vesak-related events such as lantern and pandal exhibitions and Bhakthi Gee performances.
Acting on instructions from the Inspector General of Police, all police stations have been directed to take necessary measures to minimise traffic congestion and ensure public convenience in these areas.
Security arrangements will include enhanced day and night mobile patrols and special operations across all police divisions to strengthen public safety and protect property.
Police further warned that strict legal action will be taken against individuals or groups whose behaviour undermines the dignity and sanctity of the Vesak festival or causes inconvenience to devotees.
In addition, a series of public guidelines have been issued to ensure a peaceful Vesak environment.
Members of the public have been urged to refrain from engaging in activities such as Olubakkan dancing, wearing inappropriate costumes, or behaviour that diminishes the spiritual nature of the festival.
The use of loud music in public spaces, particularly near Dansal and pandal sites, has been discouraged, while loudspeakers must be used responsibly and only with proper legal approval.
Visitors attending Vesak events have also been advised to abstain from alcohol and narcotic substances.
Organisers of Dansal programmes have been instructed to adhere to health and safety regulations and implement proper crowd management measures to prevent congestion and traffic disruptions.
The police further called on the public to avoid improper parking that could obstruct traffic, dispose of waste responsibly, and remain vigilant about personal belongings to prevent theft.
Special attention has also been urged for the safety of children and elderly persons in crowded locations.
Members of the public have been encouraged to remain alert to suspicious activities and report any concerns to the nearest police officer.
Authorities have also provided contact points for reporting incidents, including WhatsApp numbers 070-4755600 for video evidence related to road safety concerns and 070-3500525 for complaints regarding vehicles emitting excessive smoke.
Emergency assistance can be obtained through the police hotlines 118 and 119.
The Sri Lanka Police have appealed for public cooperation in adhering to these guidelines to ensure that Vesak is observed in a peaceful and respectful manner, allowing devotees to fully experience the spirit and serenity of the season.
