COLOMBO (News 1st) - Sri Lanka Railways has announced plans to import 10,000 tracks to replace worn-out lines along the coastal railway route.
According to officials, the consignment of rail tracks is expected to arrive in the country next month.
The department noted that the deterioration of tracks has led to the imposition of speed restrictions between Panadura and Colombo Fort on the coastal line, resulting in delays in train services.
With the arrival and installation of the new tracks, authorities expect to remove approximately 70 percent of the current speed restrictions along the coastal route by December this year.
Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka Railways also stated that tenders for the modernization of seven bridges along the coastal railway line will be awarded next month.
The bridges scheduled for renovation are located in Kompannavidiya, Wellawatte, Pinwatta, Aluthgama, Induruwa, Gintota, Dodanduwa, and Hikkaduwa.
