COLOMBO (News 1st); Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka has expressed concern over attempts by certain groups to create instability in the country once again.
The former Commander of the Sri Lanka Army stated that politicians have repeatedly misled the public while portraying themselves as saviors of the nation. He noted that, at various times, people had fallen victim to such narratives.
Fonseka specifically referred to individuals such as Wimal Weerawansa and others who shared similar political platforms, accusing them of opportunistic behavior.
He pointed out that during the height of the conflict, when soldiers were engaged in intense fighting and their families were enduring significant hardship, these individuals failed to provide support or show empathy.
According to him, they neither assisted the war effort nor offered even basic aid to those on the frontlines.
The Field Marshal emphasized that many families continue to suffer due to the sacrifices made by war heroes, yet those he criticized had not demonstrated meaningful concern for them.
He further alleged that such individuals are now attempting to gain political advantage by exploiting the victory achieved through the sacrifices of the armed forces. He said that leaders associated with them had also failed to ensure justice for war heroes in the past, instead using the situation for personal benefit.
Fonseka warned that similar attempts could intensify in the future and urged the public to remain vigilant.
He stressed that efforts are being made to reignite divisions within society and cautioned that if people are misled again, it would ultimately harm both the public and the nation.
He called on citizens to recognize these attempts and reject them, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding the country’s unity and security.
