COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka Railways has begun assessing the damage caused by a train derailment at Wanawasala, officials said.
Sri Lanka Railways Spokesman Asanka Samarasinghe stated that the assessment process is expected to be completed either today or tomorrow.
He added that a report based on the findings will be submitted to the police to determine further action.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday (16) when a train travelling from Polgahawela to South Kalutara derailed between the Wanawasala and Kelaniya railway stations.
As a result of the derailment, one of the train’s compartments veered off the track, while a nearby parked motor vehicle also sustained damage.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Railways confirmed that repair work on the track has been completed and that train operations on the route have returned to normal today.
