Internal Probe Launched into Death of Welikada Prison Inmate

COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Department of Prisons has launched an internal probe into the death of an inmate who was serving a sentence at the Welikada Prison.

The inquiry is being conducted under a Senior Jailor. 

According to the Department of Prisons, the inmate fell ill following an altercation with prison officers and subsequently passed away. 

The deceased has been identified as a 40-year-old resident of Borella.

In a related development, another inmate recently died following an assault at Magazine Prison. 

An internal probe is being carried out under an Assistant Superintendent of Prisons regarding the incident.

Officials at the Department of Prisons further stated that a Prison Jailor and four guards have been remanded in connection with the death of an inmate Magazine Prison.
