COLOMBO (News 1st); The Sri Lanka Cricket Transformation Committee is scheduled to hold its inaugural meeting next week, marking the start of a comprehensive reform process aimed at rebuilding the country’s cricket to World Cup-winning standards.
Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Sunil Kumara Gamage said the government is committed to restoring Sri Lanka Cricket to a level capable of securing another World Cup title. He said the responsibility of the ministry is to rebuild sport as part of the broader national development agenda.
As part of this process, the Sports Minister today (4) handed over letters of appointment to four additional members of the Cricket Transformation Committee.
Those appointed are Sidhath Wettimuni, Avanthi Colombage, Prakash Schaffter and Tushira Radella.
Minister Gamage said the committee is backed by a strong ten-member team, supported by additional expertise, and expressed confidence that existing issues within cricket administration can be resolved to usher in a renewed era for the sport. He noted that similar interventions have already been carried out in other sports, including rugby.
Clarifying the purpose of the committee, the minister stressed that its role extends beyond overseeing elections. He said the committee has been mandated to carry out broader structural reforms to rebuild a cricket system that has declined over time.
He added that the selection of committee members was based solely on competence and commitment to national development, without consideration of religion, ethnicity, political affiliation or past positions. Emphasising confidence in the leadership of the committee, the minister said the chairman is an experienced administrator, manager and former cricketer capable of steering the reform process.
